Proverbs 4:7-9 [KJV]

7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

INTRODUCTION

In simple term, wisdom is the correct application of knowledge; in other words, for you to apply wisdom, knowledge must be available. Therefore, wisdom is difficult to dispense when there is no knowledge, because it is the correct application of the knowledge you have that is called wisdom. The scripture says “wisdom is the principal thing”: when you say something is principal, it means it comes first in the order of priority. Going further in this topic, we will build on types of wisdom, and few other things about wisdom.

TYPES OF WISDOM

1.         Godly wisdom: But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:17. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. James 3:13. Godly wisdom is that which is inspired by God, and is for good. I have seen that quite a number of people have been trapped with the words of their mouth because they lack wisdom. It is not everything you see or know that you speak out. 1 kings 3:16-17.

2.         Worldly wisdom: James 3:14-17. When wisdom is applied unto perversion, it is known as worldly wisdom. That was the kind of wisdom that Gehazi emlopyed in the case of Naaman. 2 Kings  5:21-22 “So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?  And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.” The result thereof was unto destruction. Another example was that of the foolish rich man in Luke12:16-21. Many people are carrying a lot of things they have acquired around, and in a bid to showcase, have attracted evil to themselves. I don’t mean that being rich is bad but let your riches be the one that draws your heart towards God.

WHAT WISDOM CAN DO

Wisdom virtually gives us a lot of thigs in life, in fact there is virtually nothing you need that wisdom cannot give you. Some of things that wisdom gives is:

i.          Life: Wisdom has the ability to give on life. Ecclesiastes  7:12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. For example, when there are laid down safety instruction given and you deliberately refuse to comply. Eventually, there is an effect, such is regarded as foolishness. When wisdom is applied it gives life.

ii.         House: Proverbs  24:3 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established. We are talking physical building and also a home (family) Proverbs  14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. I always tell people that a woman that follows everything her husband say is wise, though may seem foolish in the eyes of others. For such woman her husband can go any length to defend her.

iii.        Battle or war is won: Ecclesiastes  9:14-15 “There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man”. The man in this scripture brought victory to the city.

iv.        The Gospel is preached: 1 Cor. 3:19 “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” There are certain people when you want to preach to them, will shut down straight away but with wisdom you can still preach to them. Even God himself used wisdom to defeat the devil (1 Cor. 4:21-25).

v.         Wisdom is profitable to direct: The simple hygiene rules that has be recommended in this period ought to be given compliance for our safety, as wisdom is profitable to direct. Ecclesiastes  10:10 “If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct”.

vi.        Riches: Wisdom has the ability to give on riches. Ezekiel  28:4 “With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures”.

HOW DO WE GET WISDOM?

Learning from Solomon, because the bible says Solomon excelled in wisdom. Some of the things we should take note of in Solomon’s life are as follows:

i.          Solomon Knew God 1Kings 2:1-4

ii.         Solomon had the fear of God Psalm 111:10

iii.        He lived in obedience Matt. 7:24

iv.        He asked God for wisdom. James 1:5

v.         He had a kingdom mindset Matt. 6:33

CONCLUSION

Psalms  127:1 “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain”. In this midst of the pandemic, the sure hope we have is God. How can we successfully protect ourselves from all the rules that have be given us concerning the prevention of the virus. Our focus should be on God; for Anyone who does not look above will find himself in the ground. Psalms  91:1-2 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust..” We need to continually declare God’s word over our lives and trust Him for preservation.
