Psalms 124:1-4

1. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; 

2. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:  3. Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: 

4. Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

COMMENTARY

The purpose of the topic is to encourage us in times like this. “If” in this scripture is connoting the presence of something that has influence on every other thing around. When we say “if it has not been the Lord”, it is a bid to be conscious, most of the time whenever we escape a bad circumstance or get a breakthrough; there is tendency to point to ourselves as the brain behind the victory. The scripture has clarified whom the reference is to be drawn. “If it had not been the LORD, now may Israel say”. In other words, let it be the voice of the speaking of Israel to acknowledge God in all things. The introduction of God makes the great difference in everyone’s life. This simply tells us that God is our deliverer when men rise against us and in every circumstance.

We must always learn to acknowledge God in everything that goes on around us. The fact that you are not affected by the COVID 19 is enough to make you know that God is on your side. It is obvious that no one can survive all the precautions that have been recommended to us by the government. Hence surviving the pandemic can only be the hand of God. We can’t put God out of the equation, as touching our safety.

If it has not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: then we had been swallowed up (Psalms 124:2). There is always a rising up of men against us: in the family, office, finances, business, community, etc. Cain and Abel are an example of a man rising up against another “Genesis 4”. It wasn’t the fault of Abel that Cain’s offering was not accepted, but Cain rose up against him. David and Saul is another example. There are similar happenings like that in our lives but God has always shown up for us. “Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

2 Cor. 10:3-4

3. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 

4. (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

As the scriptures says:” It is through God“; if God is not the source of your strength as a child of God then there is a problem. We all pray for promotion most times, but the truth is: our enemies increases whenever we are promoted. Promotions attracts enemies but when God is on your side, no matter what happens, he will save you. “Romans  8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”. Indeed, God is able to see you through in all ramifications of your life, be it health, safety and otherwise. He is a good point to channel our hope in life, and this should be done at all times.

CONCLUSION

Our hope today is; God being on our side. After this COVID 19, you will look back and say if it had not been the Lord who was in your side, and of course victory shall be yours in Jesus name.
